Weekend of Rioting | Topicality

Two days of rioting has left Athens resembling a war zone with burnt-out cars and wrecked shops after clashes between protestors and police sparked by the killing of a teenager. The violence, driven by anger over economic policies, engulfed other Greek cities too and the country is bracing for more riots.

Atlas of True Names | Etymology

Called the Atlas of True Names, this map traces the etymological roots of European and global place names and then translates them into English. It looks like a normal map, but once you start reading, it becomes clear that this not at all conventional. So was old New York once New Amsterdam, but here it's known as "New Wild Boar Village."

Mama Africa Left Us | Topicality

Yesterday, Miriam Makeba had just taken part in a concert near the southern town of Caserta and died of a heart attack. She, known as "Mama Africa", spent more than 30 years in exile after lending her support to the anti-apartheid struggle. In 1966 she became world famous with her hit 'Pata Pata'.

Today, 70 years ago, on November 9, 1938, Jewish people in Germany and German-controlled territories were beaten, arrested and killed. Synagogues were burned and Jewish businesses were vandalized. In most cases, the police made no effort to control the mobs that carried out these crimes.
